How Do You Show Obedience To God?
Are you wondering how to walk in obedience with God?
As Christians, we know that we are to obey God. But do we really do what he says all of the times? How do we even know it’s God who is calling us to obey him? What happens if we don’t obey him?
There are so many questions and doubt when it comes to obeying God, and this post will help you to understand how and why it’s important to obey God.
What is obedience to God?
Here are a few verses from the Bible about obedience (New King James Version of the Bible):
Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.”- John 14:23
My son, keep your father’s command, And do not forsake the law of your mother. – Proverbs 6:20
Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the Lord your God will set you high above all nations of the earth. -Deuteronomy 28:1
You shall walk in all the ways which the Lord your God has commanded you, that you may live and that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which you shall possess. -Deuteronomy 5:33
He who keeps instruction is in the way of life, But he who refuses correction goes astray. -Proverbs 10:17
Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God. And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight. – 1 John 3:21-22
And keep the charge of the Lord your God: to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, His judgments, and His testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn. -1 Kings 2:3
And we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him. -Acts 5:32
And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. -1 John 2:17
Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. – Exodus 19:5
To obey someone means to follow their commands or requests; to submit to their authority. So this means that we should follow God’s commands in our lives, as he directed us to do so.
For us to have a close relationship with God, we must obey his every command. Now these commands are not just the ones listed in the Bible, but also the commands that he gives us every day in our normal lives.
Some of us are called to become parents, to become teachers, to serve at a local hospital and serve at church.
It is not only crucial to obey God, but it is also required in order to have a close relationship with him. We cannot grow in Christ if we do not obey him. We cannot receive blessings that he has for us, to be a blessing onto others if we do not obey him.
Have you been obeying Christ in your everyday life?
What are some examples of obedience in the Bible?
Some great examples of obedience in the Bible includes Abraham’s obedience to sacrifice his son Isaac. Noah’s obedience to God was to build an ark.
Moses showed his obedience to God as he removed his sandals as he approached a burning bush, as well as following God’s instructions in the land of Egypt.
There were others who were obedient to God in the Bible and carried out God’s will. How have you been obedient to God?
How do you show obedience to God?
Showing obedience to God may not come so easily for some. However, I will share my story of obedience with you and hopefully encourage you to do the same.
When I first decided to go to college, I knew I wanted to become a surgeon. My plan was to go to college, followed by med school, and become a surgeon.
My mom worked as a Guidance Counselor at an elementary school, and as a little girl, I had no desire to follow her footsteps and work in such a setting, including the population of children she worked with. I never understood why she enjoyed that career.
Years later in college, I hit Organic Chemistry class, then I also hit a wall. There was no way I was going to pass that class. I ended up feeling lost.
I always thought I would have been a surgeon, so to reach this point, where I couldn’t go anymore, I felt lost. My plan didn’t work. What was I going to do now?
God had other plans for me. He wanted me to broaden my horizons and touch a group of people he felt I would be perfect for. A Speech-Language Pathologist.
What?! I had never heard of this career before, much less, be interested in it. However, the more I learned about it, I started to love it and I completed my college degrees and worked as a Speech-Language Pathologist.
I didn’t question God. I didn’t doubt God. I obeyed God.
It was such a dream job for me. I never even knew about that career field before God told me about it. But God knew from day one, where he needed me to be.
He needed me to be a blessing to children with disabilities—the same children my mother helped that I could’ve never seen myself working with.
That career was such a blessing for me and to others as well, as I got to help children become successful at school.
If I didn’t obey God, so many children would have lost out on the opportunities God had planned for them.
How do you know it’s God who’s calling you?
When God calls us and demands for us to do something, it may not be so clear. This is why it is important to spend more and more time with God every day of our lives.
The more time you spend with God, the more you will recognize his voice and you shall follow. Learning God’s voice will become more clearer over time.
The more time you indulge with other things in life, when God calls on you, you won’t hear him or recognize it’s him who’s calling you and may miss out on a tremendous opportunity.
One way I’ve learned to recognize that God is calling me to do something, is because it’s something I would not have initiated with my own self-interest and carried out with my own strength.
God calls us to do things where we must trust in him. We need him and must have faith in him to carry out his desires.
Like I mentioned before, when I first saw my mother working with children with disabilities, I was turned off with the idea. I just knew (or thought I did) that I would never choose to work with that population.
When I learned about becoming an SLP, it was as if a new door in my life opened up and I fit in perfectly.
Was I scared to start a new major in college? Sure. Frustrated about not finishing what I started? Absolutely.
In the moment, the feelings weren’t positive, but the more and more God opened my eyes and my heart, to what he was calling me to do, the more it felt just right for me.
Starting this blog is definitely me following God’s command. I NEVER thought I would be here today, helping women like you.
When God called me to this assignment, my faith in him had grown to another level, because I know that this is so much bigger than me. The fact that he chose me for this, I knew I needed to obey so I can be a blessing onto others.
God kept positioning me over the years to get this point, and I never saw this coming. He placed me in specific opportunities in his perfect timing, so I will be able to whole-heartedly carry out this task.
I can promise you this, I’m not doing this alone. That would be impossible. God is with me, and he’s here getting us both through this.
God knows your needs, and he equips me with what I need to be a blessing onto you.
If you ever find yourself in a place of feeling out of your comfort zone, thinking “Where is this coming from?”, that’s probably God calling you and I urge you to pray, trust and obey, my friend.
If you want to but aren’t sure how to walk in obedience with God, first, begin an intimate relationship with God and spend time with him. Learn God’s voice and what he is all about.
When you obey God, you will receive many blessings, as you will be a blessing to others. He loves you and he believes in you, and all he ask is that you do the same.
