10 Inspirational Photos of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands
St. Croix U.S. Virgin Islands is the biggest island of the United States Virgin Islands. It is considered the easternmost point in the United States of America. As part of the West Indies, St. Croix is such a gorgeous island showcasing tropical plants, clear blue waters and beautiful sunshine.
Our family now resides in Florida, but when we visit St. Croix we love to take pictures and take back memories with us. I have shared some of these pictures with you so you too can explore pieces of St. Croix in the comfort of your home.
1. Moko Jumbies
During the holidays in December and January, St. Croix celebrates the Crucian Christmas Festival. This festival is where you will get to experience food fairs, music festivals, pageant shows, festival village, street parades and many more.
The street parades consists of Children’s Parade on one day and the Adult Parade the next day along the city’s street. The Children’s and Adult parade has children and/or adult steel pan drummers, majorettes, pageant winners, and colorful carnival costumes with participants dancing to St. Croix’s local festival music, which is typically calypso music.
Part of the street parades include Moko Jumbies. Moko Jumbies have been a part of St. Croix’s cultural heritage for many decades. A Moko Jumbie is basically a walker or dancer on stilts. “Moko” is another word for “herbalist” or “healer” and “Jumbie” is another way to say “ghost”.
The Moko Jumbies wear beautiful bright festival costumes with masks as they dance and greet the spectators of the parade. Moko Jumbies also dance and appear at cultural events during other times of the year like local premier events and even beach parties.
2. Fort Christiansvaern
Fort Christiansvaern is one of the most important historical building structures located on St. Croix. You will find Fort Christiansvaern on the waterfront property of the Christiansted National Historic Site.
At Fort Christiansvaern, you are able to tour around the inside and outside of the building and learn about St. Croix’s history, which includes slavery and emancipation. This is a great way for you and your family to enjoy a nice afternoon on the island with a beautiful ocean view.
3. Seaplane
Interested in traveling in an unusual way between islands? The seaplane is a type of aircraft that can float, land and take off in ocean water. This aircraft doesn’t have wheels, but instead it has floats which helps it to operate on water efficiently.
In St. Croix, you have the option to travel between the U.S. Virgin Islands on a seaplane or an airplane. The flights on a seaplane are just a few minutes long with just a few passengers.
Locals call this “island-hopping” as you can fly on a seaplane from St. Croix to St. Thomas during the day, back and forth. You fly over to one island in the morning, go shopping or visit family members, and then return to your original destination that same day.

9. Animals- Iguanas
Do you like lizards? To me, iguanas are just big lizards. Others may disagree and say that iguanas are disturbing looking reptiles.
Really, iguanas are lizards that you usually will find in tropical places like Mexico, Bahamas and are now migrating more and more to Florida. If interested, you can care for an iguana as your personal pet.
Green iguanas were not as popular in St. Croix years ago as they are today. Yet, you will find iguanas roaming in your backyard, chilling on the rooftop of your home or hiding in trees.
Most iguanas are herbivores. They love to feed on flowers, fruits, and leaves. Green iguanas are usually harmless, though have caution as they have sharp teeth. They are very laid back creatures and just love to lounge in the sun.

Animals- Horses
Similar to iguanas, horses also share the island of St. Croix with residents. Horses are plentiful and are found everywhere on the island.
Horses are found on private residential properties, vacant grassy areas, beaches, and parks. St. Croix also hosts horse racing events at the local racetrack.
Horses can be such a joy to have as part of your family. Horses can be used for transportation to get you from place to place around the island. Sometimes you find tourists enjoying a horse ride as they tour certain areas.
Horses can also be used for carrying things or pulling large heavy items. Whatever, your purpose, a horse is there to help you.
10. Pigs and Beer
Since we are talking about animals. I saved the best for last. I don’t think there is any better entertainment in the world than St. Croix’s very own beer drinking pig.
Home to St. Croix’s Mt. Pellier Hut Domino Club, are the beer-drinking pigs. You will see pigs having the time of their lives gulping down an entire can of beer (non-alcoholic).
When you visit St. Croix, head to the rainforest over to this bar and restaurant and get a nice drink for yourself. After your drink, request to give the pig a beer. These pigs are loved by their caretakers and you become part of the family with a nice beer in your hand. Say “hello” for us!
